Waiting for Princess....

My daughter, the lovely Princess (yes, this is what she calls herself, lol)
is on a stay up late, sleep in cycle. We hit these every once in a while
around here. I have tried waking her up, putting her in bed earlier,
it just doesn't stand a chance against her natural rhythm.
I don't really have much planned for today, it feels a bit humid already,
so I'm thinking we won't be going outside until after Farmer Dad gets home.
We picked our first couple of ripe tomatoes last night, and there should be more today.
If it's not raining, maybe we can all go out and find some.
Maybe we'll clean up the house a bit, but not sure I feel like doing that
with the humidity.I don't feel like leaving the house for the same reason.
She has been deep in the world of dolls lately, babies, barbies, you name it.
Maybe I'll just let her free play instead of trying to direct her in some way today.
I feel a bit "guilty" when I do, but I feel "guilty" if I don't give her free time as well.
Especially in the summer. We will read, we read many books every day, but normally
I try to fit a craft or game or puzzle into the story and make a "learning" experience out of it.
I have read in several different books lately that they need to get "bored" . I'm not sure Princess has ever been bored, but maybe it's because I plan too many activities (I'm talking about at home) for her.
Sorry for the long disorganized ramble today....must be the humidity.

Don't feel guilty! You do so much! I'm loving reading your blog, but, I must confess, makes me a little wistful that I don't have my own fairy princess to float through the day with. But what would I do without my two "rough and tumbles?" I'd be lost! You are really inspiring me on homeschooling and blogging about h/s...don't be surprised (or offended) if I start copying you! :>)

We have been having lazy summer days lately. You do so much and it's quite inspiring. It just may be the season of you both needing a little break from anything planned.

Do yourself a huge favor for the future and let her enjoy free play. At a certain period of development, kids who have not practiced this a lot loose the ability, and it is far too sad.

You'll thank yourself in later years, trust me!

You have no reason to feel guilty, you do so much for your daughter,it's truly amazing! I think feeling guilty is part of being a parent though lol! It sounds like you have a nice balance of free time and structured activities:) I think when kids do get a little bored, they tend to come up with creative solutions to fix the problem. I have no guilt when O grumbles up the stairs, after I tell him no more computer games,he usually appears 30 minutes later with some cool idea for an invention he came up with;-)

Thanks Gals! I do feel a bit better about it today- I think I get caught up in how much all the Moms with older kids are doing and worry I'm not "teaching" her much. ;-)

I think free time or play is one of the most important elements in a child's life.

I also agree with O.

Ami can almost always find something to do that she prefers over anything I plan. I think this is partially due to being an only.

So, I think you should give yourself a pat on the back that Princess knows how to entertain herself. And sometimes some concepts can be learned easily and quicker when they are just a bit older so, don't be afraid to drop something and come back to it later.

Sorry to come in here late but I think free plays is learning too. I think there are even a couple books on it. *grin*

If it makes you feel better I am sure you read to her and that can be enough for some days.

Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be a sort of amusement; you will then be better able to discover the child's natural bent .
