The Very Late Book Post

Here are some of the books we have been reading for fun this week

Frederick Douglass writer, speaker, and opponent of slavery
by Suzanne Slade and illustrated byRobert McGuire

A nice biography of Frederick Douglass told in terms Princess could understand.
She especially liked the time line in the back of the book.

The Whole Green World by Tony Johnston and illustrated by Elisa Kleven
Princess has been enjoying this little book, she tells me that
the little girl in it reminds her of Johnny Appleseed.

I've got a little sack of seeds
(fat and slick like glassy beads.)
Got a little sack of seeds
to plant the whole round world.

A Second is a Hiccup by Hazel Hutchins and illustrated by Kady Macdonald Denton
The abstract concept of time is explained in child-friendly terms. Our fave:
Run right through a sprinkly shower
Climb a tree and smell a flower
Pretend you have a secret power
That should nicely fill
An hour.
Little Bill, Happy Valentines Day by Robert Scull and illustrated by Michael Lennicx and Estu Kahata
Little Bill makes valentines with and for his friends at school.
Princess really enjoys the Little Bill show and books.
I enjoy the collage style art .

The Paper Princess Finds Her Way by Elisa Kleven
The paper princess sits forgotten under a paperweight since the little girl who made her has grown and stopped playing with her. With the help of a dog and a gentle breeze, she sets off to find new friends. We enjoy all the books by this author, the pictures alone made it worth reading.

You can still see the books we are using in our lessons on the sidebar to the right.
I will leave them there all month, each month.
Just a reminder: Tomorrow is Valentines Day and Read to Your Child Day.

We read A Whole Green World ages ago and I'd completely forgotten about it- I loved the illustrations in that one. A Second Is a Hiccup sounds like a really good one too.

I agree with Cher, you write great and frequent reviews. I adore Elisa Kleven and I think A Second is a Hiccup is a fantastic book. It reminds me that I want to add it to my Paperbackswap wish list.

Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be a sort of amusement; you will then be better able to discover the child's natural bent .
