Johnny Appleseed Crafts

Today we read about Johnny Appleseed and cut open a couple of apples to
"paint" with. We made a "hand print" apple tree and I sketched an apple and
Johnny himself for Princess to color.Princess also practiced writing "apple"
on apple shaped lined paper we printed from the computer. The links are in my last post.
I do not consider myself an expert, but several people
have asked me to post pictures of the crafts from start to finish. So here you are:
The first picture show Princess putting the states Johnny was known to start orchards in
back into her puzzle map.I used it to show her how far he walked (and sometimes canoed).
The next shows her looking at the cut up apples and then stamping away with them.
The next picture shows her ready to imprint her arm/hand to make the "tree".
We let it dry and then we had her use her fingertip dipped in red paint to make the apples.
Then we used fingertips and the paintbrush to make the leaves with green after the red dried.
Then she colored in the apple and Johnny I sketched because she asked for them.
The last picture is all our work displayed in our "school area".
I hope this is helpful.

I like you explained what you did. I couldn't tell what the red was on the apple tree so when you wrote she used her finger prints, it made sense. That is so cool that she does that. Zachary has his OWN way of doing it. I could tell him to use his fingers and he would most likely not like that idea. agghhh. This was a few months ago, may be I should do more crafts that are more structured now that he just turned 4. I love reading your blog, keep it up

We'll be doing something similar for
the Cherry Blossom Festival near the end of the month. Instead of paint
for the flowers, we will use tissue paper.

Wonderful explanations and photos. I love the apple tree print. It is frame worthy. :) Using wooden puzzle to track his journey is a fantastic idea. I am copying that idea for the future. Anything that inspires others is helpful.

My homeschool buddies and I are all posting pics of our "home schools" as part of our idea sharing.

Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be a sort of amusement; you will then be better able to discover the child's natural bent .
