Happy Fourth of July !!

Today we added 3 more citizens to our little corner
of the United States of America.....
Hermit Crabs
Princess hasn't named them yet, but we'll keep you posted.
First she went with Farmer Dad to the pet store and picked up
I wanted to name him/her "hoops", but she said she'll pick the name.
Then they went back and picked up the "twins" when we read
they should not be alone.
They look exactly alike, but went to opposite sides of the tank almost immediately.
We decided to stay home and celebrate being Americans together.I am not a huge fan
of fireworks, so if I play my cards right, I think we can skip them.
I'd rather watch them on t.v. than in person.

Cool! We love our hermit crabs! We now have 2: Bobby, whom we've had for 5 or 6 years, and Glory, whom we've had for 2 or 3 years.

Glory's name used to be Brownie (came in a brown shell), then switched to Greenie (can you guess?). We then stated that the name could not be connected to the shell (because when Brownie became Greenie, Greenie (a third crab) became Stripey and I. just. couldn't. take. it!! So that crab is now Glory and lives in a gloriously iridescent shell. :P

Fortunately, she and Bobby are different colors, and have vastly different temperaments, so we've always been able to tell them apart.

W- we still haven't decided on any names..they were really checking out their "crabitat" last night, this morning it looks deserted...except for some "lumps" in the substrate. lol

P- My P decided she wanted some as pets when her homeschool friends each got one after time at the beach. She found them fascinating. It was the first pet request that wasn't met with "no" around here.Poor Princess. ;-)

Cool shell decoration! Have you seen the little kits where you can paint your own extra shells for them? I saw one with "bling" at the pet store recently!

I'll have to send or post a photo dh took of Cate holding very small hermit crabs at the beach this weekend.

I hope you had a relaxing 4th weekend. It was nice to have a long one with dh home. I don't like fireworks either. We were really fortunate this year to not have too many neighbors messing with them.

How neat for Princess! Ami has been wanting one since someone let her hold one at a doctor's office, of all places. (Ok, I freak out viewing them, and I use to be afraid of frogs.) So I let her get a sponge hermit crab for a dollar. Place in a glass of water and watch it grow. Ami, "Who dumped the water out?" (It was in the kitchen and it was grossing me out.)

Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be a sort of amusement; you will then be better able to discover the child's natural bent .
