Johnny Appleseed

Today is also the birthday of Johnny Appleseed.
We will most like celebrate it with a tea and some
"apple sauce muffins" in the afternoon.
The weather is supposed to be miserable here,
and we have much to do to get ready for Princess's
"Autumn Birthday Festival" this Sunday.
I was hoping to get in an apple craft to celebrate today, but we were too busy
cleaning out my closet..looking for the party favors I had ready in advance.
Last year we had a lot of fun making "apple stamps" and printing cards and wrapping paper
with them. Princess's Great Aunt Grace L-O-V-E-S apples, so we make many drawings of them for her.
We will read a few books... Johnny Appleseed by Reeve Lindbergh
and our favorite is by Steven Kellogg.
I think he's an interesting character well worth learning about.
Happy Fall Y'all!

We shall celebrate with our new favorite variety, Honey Crisp.

When Moose was in first grade, I agreed to help his class make apple sauce, and was very nervous until I saw the knives the teacher provided. She brought in those pumpkin-carving knives that come in a kit -- small, with very dull, serrated blades. Perfect for little hands, and not one child was injured!

Great day to re-read the apple chapter in The Botany of Desire, too, eh?

Happy birthday, Johnny Appleseed, and may the hard cider never run out!

Happy Birthday to a wonderful little Princess! I hope she enjoys her special day :)

How fun to share a birthday with Johnny Appleseed, too.

And as for the "three hours, three pushes" birth story . . . bless her little heart! What a nice thing to do for her mama ;)

YOu always make me feel so guilty about my lack of book reading to Peter. I need to get on the stick. He's gone from 8 to 4:30 to school and its just so rushed in the evening. But I have resloved to get books in regardless.

We love Johnny Appleseed, and I didn't evn know Steven Kellog, one of our favorites too, had a book about him. We are going to have to look for it this week. Thanks for always reminding us about the cool things going on.

Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be a sort of amusement; you will then be better able to discover the child's natural bent .
