Book Post on Tuesday

Here are some books we are using for our homeschooled
"science girl" (can you picture the cape blowing in the wind?)....

Science Through Children's Literature An Integrated Approach.
I had to pick this up when I saw it, because that is how I have been
"teaching" science to Princess.I like this book and will definitely be
using some of the ideas in it here in our homeschool.

Birds We Know is A New True Book.
We love bird watching here, so I thought this would be great,
but I don't think it contains enough "new information" for Princess.
Great basic book for young kids though.

One Small Square Backyard
One Small Square African Savanna

I love all the One Small Square series, they are wonderfully illustrated and filled with great
information. They teach what you need to explore the area (one small square of it) and give ideas
of field exercises. I would love to own this series for our home library as they are not only fun
to read, but make an excellent reference text.
Princess and I can spend hours pouring over them!

Where Butterflies Grow
It is hard to go wrong with a book by either Joanne Ryder or Lynne Cherry (In my humble opinion)
and here you have them both. The illustrations are gorgeous and the information is meaty enough for
my little "science girl" even though it is written more like a poem than a scientific text.
The back of the book contains directions for adapting a part of a garden to attract butterflies as well.

A couple more by Joanne Ryder that we have been enjoying are Winter Whale and Shark In The Sea
Princess really enjoys this series as well. They are written as though you are imagining yourself to be
the animal the book is teaching about. The illustrations are awesome and there is additional info given
in the Author's Note in the beginning of the book.

Once again, I have way more books to write about than I have time to type.
I hope this list is useful for some of you whether you are homeschooling your children or not.

Thanks for all of the great book recommendations. We're very interested in birds, bugs, and butterflies around here, so I'll have to check some of them out!

I love the Square series too, and you're right- it would be a great resource to own! The science book sounds very interesting- I'd love yo know what you two think of it after you've tried some of the activities. And Joanne Ryder is a favorite here, too- thanks for another good list!

Looks like there might be some "keepers" on this list. I have jotted a few down for our next library trip.

Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be a sort of amusement; you will then be better able to discover the child's natural bent .
